Washingon DCまでお出かけしてきました。
Washington DCまでは364miles (582.4km)。ちなみに仙台ー静岡間が542kmです。
日本にいたころはこれくらいの距離だと車を第一選択にはしなかったのですが、
ここはアメリカ。もちろん車（$950かけて大修理完了）で出かけました。
もともとワシントンDCの桜は1912年に日本の東京市長（当時）から送られたものだそうです。
3000本の桜がシアトルに上陸し、鉄道でDCまで送られたそうです。
現在、桜の季節にDCを訪れる人は100万人に上るということです。

We couldn't be staying home and putting rooms in order. Let's go and see
the SAKURA!!!
The distance from our home to DC is 364 miles. This time we drove to DC.
We really appreciate American freeway system. Our car has just fixed (It
costed $950!).
Originally 3000 Cherry trees were gifted from the city of Tokyo to Washington
DC in 1912.
The trees landed at Seattle and were carried to DC on a train.
1,000,000 people visit Washington DC during Cherry Blossom season.
到着したのは日もとっぷり暮れてから。夕飯はタイ料理をいただきました。
観光一日目、メトロ（地下鉄）に乗って朝一番にやってきたのは、ホワイトハウス。
その前に地下鉄の駅でミッキーさんを見つけて大喜び。
さて、やっとホワイトハウス。半年前から予約すると中を見学できるそうですが、
今回は外から眺めただけ。ビジターセンターも飲み物を持っていると
入れないと断られ、後で来ようと思っているうちに時間切れ！
また機会があったら訪ねてみたいものです。
We put up a motel nearby the Pentagon, Arlington, VA.
It took 6 hours to get to the Pentagon. We enjoyed dinner at a Tai restaurant.
The next day, took a Metro (Subway) to the White House.
At the Metro Station, Many Mickey Mouse statues welcomed us.
This time we just took a look at the White House from outside of the fence.
If we could come again, we would like to join the tour

Postal Museum
人力、馬車、船（運河）、速馬、鉄道、飛行機と時代とともに
その配達方法を進化させ、それとともに人々の移住を促してきた郵便の歴史。
ニュースの集まる場所、ニュースを広める場所としての郵便局の役割。
（ワシントンポストという新聞の名前は、
郵便局が最初に新聞を作っていたという歴史を残しているそうです。）
隣の郵便局で先月我が家に送られてきたFlat Stanleyにも消印を押してもらい、大満足！
Then rode a sight seeing bus and got to the National Postal Museum.
A volunteer (Thanks Amy!) showed us around the museum.
We studied a lot about History and the roles of postal service.
Do you know why the word "POST" is used as a title of a newspaper?
(Because historically news gatherd to post offices and they made
newspapers and distributed the newspapers.)
Also Flat Stanley got a cancellation stamp! Gotcha!
全く信じられないくらい素晴らしい絵画が沢山、それも普通に展示されているのです。
どうやっても一日では回りきれなそうです。今回はレンブラント展をやっていました。
贅沢にレンブラントの作品がどど〜んと！いやはやすごすぎる。。。
目的のフェルメール、ルーベンス、ルノアールを見て今回はお腹一杯。
残念ながらフェルメールの一番見たかった絵は他の美術館に旅行中で
まだ帰って来ていませんでした。レオナルド・ダ・ビンチもまだ見てません。
残念！ またいつかゆ〜〜っくり来たいものです。
The National Gallery is free!!! Besides, they exhibited really magnificent paintings, sculptures and etc.
This time Renbrandt's portraits were exhibited.
I was satisfied with Vermeer, Renoir and Rubens.
This gallery is too huuuuge to see in one day. We need to go back again and again!

アメリカンインディアン博物館へ”バッファローバーガー”を
食べに行きました。独特のにおいがありますが、ものめずらしいので
楽しくいただきました。アメリカンインディアンが近しく感じている自然を象徴した
風と水をイメージした曲線的な建物です。
We had a Buffalo Burger for lunch which was told
by a guide on a sightseeing bus.
It tasted a little bit wild.
The dish was served at the National Museum of the American Indian
that was opened September 2004.
The curvaceous building symbolizes "wind and water"
which reflect native Americans' close relationship with the nature.

パパはここを楽しみにしていたようですが、最終バスに乗るために
駆け足で通り過ぎただけでした。次回はゆっくり見たいものですね。
Then, the National Air and Space Museum.
Papa seems looking forward to seeing this museum.
But to take the last bus, there was a short time left...
We just made a hurried tour.
We hope to have enough time to see this museum next time.
Tidal Basinのすぐ隣にあり、第３代大統領を記念して作られました。
このTidal Basinが今回の旅の目的桜の名所です。
円形の池を取り巻くように桜が植えられています。
ピクニックをする人がポツリポツリ。アイスクリームを食べながら桜見物したり、
そぞろ歩き、記念撮影。皆思い思いに桜を楽しんでいました。
We could catch the last bus and got off at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
That locates next to the Tidal Basin
and comemmorates Thomas Jefferson, third president.
This Tidal Basin is famous for its cherry blossoms.
Surrounding it cherry trees are planted.
A picnic, to eat icecream under a tree, a stroll, and a photo;
people were enjoying themselves.

ホテルに帰りました。今日の夕飯は中華料理。アジア料理ばっかり。
Walked a lot. We went back to the motel taking a bus after getting off the metro.
The dinner was Chinese, we are really lovers of Asian dishes !
Potomac Parkで桜並木を堪能し、Ohio Driveに沿って
車を走らせると目的のリンカーン記念館！
学校でアメリカの大統領について勉強しており、リンカーンさんが
身近な人に感じられているかいけ。リンカーンに会いに行くんだと
とっても張り切っていました。第16代大統領リンカーンの像を見て大満足。

Slept well. Second day we moved in the car.
Enjoyed a road lined with cherry trees at the Potmac Park.
Drove along Ohio Drive then reached the Lincoln Memorial.
Kaike had studied about Lincoln at the school and felt close to him.
Therefore she was looking forward to visiting this memorial and
was satisfied with the statue.
Do not forget to take a picture with Flat Stanley!

ワシントンモニュメントが見えます。

ワシントンモニュメントにも登りました。初代大統領を記念するための建造物です。
1848年に建設が開始され、一期工事は1858まで。Civil warをはさんで
二期工事が1878-1888に行われたそうです。同じ産地からの石を使っても
この20年間の休止期のために、途中で石の色が変わっています。
このモニュメントの建築には鉄骨は一切使われていないそうです。
The Washington monument commemorates the first president.
The construction got started in 1848 and put Civil War between the construction
period,
and completed in 1888.
During this pause, stones which came from same region, though, changed
their color.
No steel frame was used in this monument.

周囲を歩いているときから
ほわ〜んとお札の匂いが漂っていました。
めったに見ることが無い
高額紙幣やら裁断前の紙幣など
お金の展示を見てきました。

Wen we were walking around the building,
the scent of bills was in the air.
We saw a rare sheet of the bills before cutting
and a large denomination bill.
お金大好き！

目的はかの有名なバイオリン・Stradivarius!
しかし、バイオリンは展示品ではなく、会議室の飾りでした。。。
普段は鍵がかけられており公開はされていません。しかし、一年に２回
ジュリアード音楽院の音楽家によるコンサートで使われているそうです。
このコンサートは会議室の隣のホールで開かれ、一般も公開されており、しかも無料とのことです。
とても人気があり、あっという間に定員一杯になってしまうそうです。
ところでこの建物。素晴らしすぎます。立派過ぎます。イタリアルネッサンス様式とか。
ツアーで館内を案内してくれるのですが、建物の装飾だけでも説明が
めちゃめちゃ長く、移動は階段を走ってました。すごいツアーだ！
ちなみにバスルームも豪華で美しかったです。
Lastly, we visited the Library of Congress.
The purpose was the musical instruments made by Antonio Stradivari.
But!!! Stradivariuses are not on the display!!!
They are put in a shelf in a conference room and are played twice a year
by the Julliard String Quartet. The concert is opened to the public and free.
The concert is held at the Coolidge Auditorium in the library and very popular.
The tickets are sold out in an instant.
By the way, the building is really glorious, splendid, brilliant and never-to-be-forgotten!
Thomas Jefferson Building is constructed in 1897 and has Italian Renaissance architecture.
There was a tour in the library, in which everyone was running to see this distinguished building,
because there are lots of things to see. What a tour!
In addition, bathrooms were also gorgeous and beautiful.

国立航空宇宙博物館に未練を残したかいけパパ。リンカーンさん、バッファローバーガー、
ストラディヴァリウスと満喫したかいけ。桜と絵画で大満足のママ。
皆良く歩き久しぶりのお出かけを楽しみました。パパ運転お疲れ様。
国立自然史博物館、国立アメリカ歴史博物館、
国立アフリカ美術館、 アメリカンインディアン博物館等々まだ見ていない
展示がたっくさん！国会議事堂、慰霊碑、FBI、ユニオンステーション
アーリントン国立墓地、JFKセンター・・・まだまだ見所は沢山あります。
Everyone enjoyed and felt reluctant to leave Washington DC that
day.

National Museum of Natural History, National Museum American History,
National Museum of African Art, National Museum of the American Indian,
US Capitol, Memorials, FBI, Union Station,
Arlington National cemetery, JFK Center and so on...
